
Community Service Scholarship Winner
In June, the Bayview Civic League awarded presented a $500.00 check to our first winner of the “Community Service Scholarship”. Congratulations Rachel Wallace, Norview High School Valedictorian. and community service volunteer at the Norfolk Zoo, Youth Conservation Corps, and numerous church activities. Rachel will be attending William and Mary this fall to study Anthropology.
2nd Annual Bayview Civic League Scholarship Fund
Applications to be accepted beginning March 2009
Recipient(s): a graduating high school senior who has been accepted to a 2-college, a 4-year college, or a trade/vocational school
Award: At least $250 to 500 paid towards first-year college expenses (the money will be sent directly to the institution)
Application deadline:
All application materials must be postmarked no later than May 1 or directly received by a board member of the Bayview Civic League (BCL). Applications will continue to be accepted prior to the selection committee meeting as long as sufficient funds remain available.
Eligibility:
· the applicant or an immediate family member must live within the BCL’s jurisdiction;
· the applicant or an area family member must be a current member of the BCL;
· the applicant must demonstrate a history of community service or volunteerism;
· the applicant must have a G.P.A. of B or higher at the time of application;
· if chosen, the successful applicant must attend the June BCL meeting to receive the award.

A complete application packet will consist of the following items:
· A BCL Scholarship application form
· A personal essay or electronic presentation that truthfully explains how the applicant plans to use the scholarship, how (s)he has benefited his or her community, and what his or her career and civic aspirations are. (The electronic presentation may take the form of a DVD, CD, or a link to an accessible slide show or YouTube video that was created by the applicant.)
· A listing of the student’s community service and volunteer activities (Include the event, its date, the name of the sponsoring organization, and the name and number of a contact person who can verify participation.)
· Proof of current G.P.A.
· Proof of college or vocational school acceptance
· Proof of the applicant’s or applicant’s family member’s physical residency
· 2-3 letters of reference from high school teachers, school administrators, or community leaders who have worked with the applicant
· A completed and signed Personal Information Waiver.
Selection: Completed applications will be evaluated by a panel made up of at least one each of the following people, none of whom may be related to the applicant: a BCL board member, a current BCL member, a Norfolk educator (may be retired), and a local public servant.
All applicants will receive written acknowledgment that your application packet has been received. Winner(s) will be notified prior to the Bayview Civic league June 2008 meeting.
