BCL Recognized with “Environmental Stewardship Award for Rivers and Waterways Protection” by
Keep Norfolk Beautiful
The Bayview Civic League is extremely proud to have been recognized by Keep Norfolk Beautiful and the Norfolk Environmental Commission with the 2008 Environmental Stewardship Award for Rivers and Waterways Protection. This award is given annually to an individual, group or business in recognition of their efforts in protection of Norfolk’s rivers, tributaries, marshes or other natural waterways. The BCL received this award for our actions in promoting awareness in the importance of our many interlaced waterways throughout Bayview and of the Chesapeake Bay, and promoting environmental stewardship through events including the Eco-Fair’s, the Great American Cleanup, community cleanups, and the many articles in our newsletter addressing ecologically sound practices everyone can use to help protect our waters. Dranan and Eileen Sparks received the award, a beautiful photograph of Norfolk’s Ernie Morgan Environmental Action Center framed with reclaimed wood from used pallets, on behalf of the Bayview Civic League at the Clean City Hero picnic this summer.
FALL CLEANUP ?
You may have noticed that we did not conduct a Fall Neighborhood Cleanup as usual in November. Between the election, the coming holidays, and low membership turn out for the last couple of fall cleanups it was just not worth the effort and energy required to pull it off this year. We do plan to participate in the Great American Cleanup in Spring 2009 and to hold our third annual Eco-Fair. These events will likely be held on separate dates next year so that we can better prepare and organize, and hopefully get larger BCL member participation for each. Stay tuned for more news and announcements on these events in the coming months. Please contact me if you would like to assist in the planning and/or execution of these events, the BCL needs your help.
Also, we need people to help keep our Bayview Civic League “Adopt-A-Spot” clean. This is Bayview Boulevard between Chesapeake Blvd. and Inlet Rd. The BCL is required to conduct and report at least four cleanups annually for our Adopt-A-Spot. We are running behind on this for 2008 and need your help for 2009. It is true that when people see an area staying clean then people are less prone to litter there. Please contact me to volunteer. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

The Encyclopedia of Life
EOL is an ambitious project to organize and make available via the Internet virtually all information about life present on Earth. At its heart lies a series of Web sites—one for each of the approximately 1.8 million known species. Each site is constantly evolving and features dynamically synthesized content ranging from historical literature and biological descriptions to stunning images, videos and distribution maps. Join us as we explore the richness of Earth’s biodiversity! www.eol.org

Please - Stop Using Plastic Bags
The Negative Impact of Plastic Bags on our Environment - Plastic bags are typically thrown away after one use, do not break down easily in the environment, fill landfills, and float into trees, rooftops, roadways, waterways, the Bay and ocean. Plastic bags are second only to cigartette butts in the type and amount of litter in Bayview. The Bayview Civic League encourages everyone to stop using plastic grocery bags, and instead use only recycled paper or reusable bags.
